If You Go to Sheol After Killing Moms Heart Does It Count Towards Blue Baby

The game of The Binding of Isaac is broken up into 7.5 different chapters with almost all chapters having two or three variations. Two of the games 7.5 chapters can only be accessed with the Afterbirth and Afterbirth+ DLC packs. The first four chapters have two floors each and the final three chapters only having one floor. As you progress through the chapters, each floor will gradually get larger and larger

From chapters 1 through 3, each floor will have an item room and a shop. Chapter 4 onward however, those rooms will no longer be available.

Chapter One

The Basement

The only floor of chapter one initially available. This is the easiest floor for the player to work through and is usually fairly small in size. At the end of each Basement floor you have the chance of fighting one of the following bosses:

  • Monstro
  • Dingle
  • Gurglings
  • Larry Jr.
  • Gemini
  • Duke of Flies
  • Famine
  • Little Horn (Afterbirth/A+)
  • Rag Man (Afterbirth/A+)
  • Turdlings (Afterbirth/A+)
  • Dangle (Afterbirth/A+)
  • Steven (Unlockable)

After defeating all available Basement bosses, you will unlock a variant called The Cellar. After clearing the Basement or it's variants forty times, you will unlock the Steven boss fight and unlock:

The Cellar

The Cellar is a variation of the Basement and reasonably more difficult with some tougher rooms introduced as well as generally being a slightly larger floor. At the end of each Cellar floor, you have the chance of fighting one of the following bosses:

  • Dingle
  • Gurglings
  • Famine
  • Duke of Flies
  • Larry Jr.
  • The Haunt
  • Pin
  • Widow
  • Blighted Ovum
  • Fistula
  • Gurdy Jr.
  • Rag Man (Afterbirth/A+)
  • Little Horn (Afterbirth/A+)

Burning Basement (Afterbirth/A+)

The final variation of chapter one. The Burning Basement is aesthetically similar to The Cellar but has a constant smokey look as you go from room to room. This smokey look can make visibility slightly tougher but is exacerbated when under the effect of Curse of Darkness. Bosses fought at the end of these floors are the same as those of The Cellar.

If you can manage to get through both floors of chapter one without taking any damage at all, you will unlock:

Basement Boy

Beat the Basement/Cellar without taking damage.

Chapter Two

The Caves

The standard floor for chapter two will see the introduction of quite a few new enemies and bosses. From chapter 2 to the first half of chapter four, boss rooms have a chance to be Double Trouble boss fights which will see you take on a combination of two bosses from previous floors. Bosses you will encounter on these floors are:

  • Chub
  • Peep
  • Gurdy
  • Gurdy Jr.
  • Mega Maw
  • Mega Fatty
  • Pestilence
  • Dark One
  • The Forsaken (Afterbirth/A+)
  • The Frail (Afterbirth/A+)
  • C.H.A.D. (Unlocked)

Once all Caves specific bosses have been defeated at least once, you will unlock the Catacombs variant for chapter 2. After clearing the Cave floors 30 times you will unlock the C.H.A.D. fight as well as:

The Catacombs

Catacombs floors are not much more difficult than the Caves floors. The main difficulty is a couple of the new bosses that you will encounter. Bosses found on this floor are:

  • The Hollow
  • Carrion Queen
  • The Dark One
  • The Husk
  • Peep
  • Polycephalus
  • The Wretched
  • Pestilence
  • The Frail
  • The Forsaken (Afterbirth/A+)
  • The Stain (Afterbirth/A+)
  • Big Horn (Afterbirth+)

Flooded Caves (Afterbirth/A+)

Enemies encountered on this floor tend to be (but are not exclusively) airborne due to the ground being covered in water. There are less breakable obstacles such as rocks which are usually replaced with water filled holes. The holes can be hard to see at times making this floor sometimes difficult to navigate. Possible bosses on this floor are those from both of the other variants.

If you can get through both floors of chapter two without taking any damage at all, you will unlock:

Spelunker Boy

Beat the Caves/Catacombs without taking damage.

  • War
  • Brownie (Afterbirth/A+)

If you are able to get through the first three chapters and defeat Mom in under 20 minutes, a large opening will appear in one of the walls allowing you to take on something called Boss Rush. To initiate Boss Rush, simply pick up one of the offered pedestal items (you can only take one so choose carefully). When Boss Rush starts, you will have to take on fifteen waves of bosses fighting two at a time. In Rebirth, the waves are predetermined but in Afterbirth/A+ it is completely random.

If in Rebirth, the boss waves will be:

  1. Blighted Ovum & Gurdy Jr.
  2. Carrion Queen & The Wretched

Chapter 4.5 (Afterbirth/A+)

The Blue Womb

If you are able to defeat Mom's Heart/It Lives in under 30 minutes, a hole in the wall similar to boss rush will open with a hole leading to the Blue Womb floor. On arrival, there will be four gold chests, two item rooms each with two possible items to choose from, and a shop. Once you are prepared, walk into the northern wall and an opening will appear leading to the Hush boss fight.

The first time Hush has been defeated; the game will end. After Hush's initial defeat, a trapdoor or spotlight will appear to continue your run as normal. If playing Afterbirth+, an opening will appear in the northern wall whee you can find the entrance to The Void which is the final chapter of the game.

Chapter Five

Once you defeat Mom's Heart, there is a chance that either a Devil or Angel room may spawn with an exit to the next chapter.Once you unlock It Lives, you will always have the option to go to one of two different floors which determines the path you take through chapters five and six. The trapdoor will lead to Sheol which continues to The Dark Room, and the spotlight will take you to The Cathedral which leads on to The Chest. Both the Cathedral and Sheol have just one floor each.

The Cathedral

As well as regular enemies, this floor can contain rooms with bosses from previous floors as mini-boss fights. The boss fight for this floor will always be Isaac.

After clearing The Cathedral and defeating Isaac five times, you will unlock the Polaroid item. It will now appear every time you kill Mom and is required to continue to the next floor after defeating Isaac. Unlocking the Polaroid will also pop:

Sheol

As with The Cathedral, the rooms of Sheol can contain either regular enemies or bosses from previous floors as mini-boss fights. The boss fight for this floor will always be Satan (joined by The Fallen).

After clearing Sheol and defeating Satan for the first time, you will unlock the character Judas and his achievement:

Once you have defeated Satan five times in total, you will unlock the Negative item. It will now appear every time you kill Mom and is required to continue to the next floor after defeating Satan. Unlocking the Negative will also unlock:

Initially after defeating either Isaac or Satan, the golden chest that appears will end your run. Once you defeat either Isaac or Satan and you have the relevant item (Polaroid for Isaac/Negative for Satan), you will instead be taken to the next chapter of the game.

Chapter Six

Pre-Afterbirth+, this will be the final accessible chapter of the game. In both chapters when you arrive, there will be four chests waiting for you. On The Chest, there will be four gold chests requiring keys with all of them holding a pedestal item. For The Dark Room, you will get four red chests with their usual assortment of possible rewards. As well as the chests, both floors with have a large door leading to the Mega Satan boss fight which will be detailed more on another page.

The Chest

The Chest can be accessed by picking up The Polaroid after defeating Mom then going to The Cathedral after defeating Mom's Heart/It Lives and defeating Isaac. It is good to plan ahead before arriving at The Chest and making sure you have a good supply of keys for both the first four chests you get on your arrival and any other possible chests you get. These drops are all chests that will have pedestal items in them instead of consumables. Each room on the lead up to the boss will likely have bosses from past floors instead of regular enemies. At the end of the floor, the boss will always be ??? (Blue Baby).

For defeating Blue Baby and clearing The Chest, you will unlock:

The Dark Room

The Dark Room can be accessed by picking up The Negative after defeating Mom then going to Sheol after defeating Mom's Heart/It Lives and defeating Satan. After opening the initial red chests, other chests found in The Dark Room have a good chance of being pedestal items similar to chests found in The Chest. As with The Chest, rooms are more likely to be have bosses from previous floors inside rather than standard enemies. The boss for The Dark Room will always be The Lamb.

For defeating The Lamb and clearing The Dark Room, you will unlock:

If you are able to get through either The Chest or The Dark Room without taking any damage at all, you will unlock:

Dead Boy

Beat the Chest or Dark Room without taking damage.

Chapter Seven (Afterbirth+)

The Void

The Void is a special floor that initially can only be accessed by defeating Hush. The Void is a mash up of all the other floors in the game with each room taking on the apprearance of one of those floors and is potentially a bit easier to navigate than either The Chest or The Dark Room as the room will have enemies relevant to the floor it appears as. On the floor, there will be multiple possible boss fights to go into which will have a boss from one of the other floors in the game with the exception of one which has the games final boss, Delirium.

Each boss you defeat before finding Delirium will give you a pedestal item, which makes fighting as many bosses as possible before Delirium a good way to move forward. To make the most out of the floor, a good strategy is to have some means of teleportation (with a pill or tarot card). Should you find Delirium prematurely, simply teleport out and make a note of where it is then head there last after all bosses are defeated.
